Running a Costume-Con

The Name

Karen Dick writes in the Genesis of Costume-Con:

COSTUME-MANIA had a certain cute appeal, but we were trying to interest a broad audience that consisted of serious costume scholars as well as hobbyists. Adrienne suggested that we might sound more legitimate if we called ourselves a "conference" instead of a "convention." Thus, we became "Costume-Con, the first annual conference for science fiction, fantasy and historical costumers." The committee never expected Costume-Con to be more than a one-shot conference, but it sounded official.

The official name of this conference is hyphenated: Costume-Con. Variations have appeared over time, and have sometimes caused quite a bit of hair pulling. However you write it (CostumeCon, Costume Con or Costume-Con), there is no distinction between these variations. Using the name in any of the formats above still requires the permission of the Service Mark Holders.

Whatever you choose to do, please be consistent throughout your marketing materials and publications. This web site is officially known as Costume-Con.org, but we hold the additional domain costumecon.org to prevent misuse and to catch people who mistype the name. All references we publish on this site contain the hyphen.

'Nuff said.
