Costuming is a diverse hobby/business, and sometimes the standard human form just isn’t what you want. Animals, monsters, aliens, and even certain historical fashions require special techniques to break the human mold. Join us as we discuss various methods of modifying the basic human form to achieve different shapes and sizes, including stilts, padding, and other additions. If you have any great tips or tricks, stop by and share your methods for looking like anything but human.

Lattice Smocking Workshop
North American or Lattice Smocking makes 3-dimensional basket weave and other effects to embellish garments, accessories and home decor items. This complicated-looking technique is simple to learn, requiring only a marking pencil, strong thread and a hand needle. This hands-on workshop lets participants stitch samples of at least two lattice smocking variations, and discusses design and technical considerations for incorporating into costumes. $4 class fee.

Military Costuming with a Side of Law Enforcement
Military veterans, Have you ever Face palmed over the media use of military uniforms? Costumers have you ever encountered issues with law enforcement? This mash-up panel will discuss everything from historical to modern uniforms. Their function, form, symbolism, cultural variances, environmental adaptation, and psychological effect. Important to all this is uniform parts, what to where, when and why. While the emphasis of this is military we also have to consider the public safety aspect of any costume as well as impersonating law and military personnel.

Textile Embossing
emBella-tex is an embossing process which allows artwork to be permanently applied to textiles and other porous surfaces. It is a water based product, once cured can be gently washed or dry cleaned. The demonstration will include an overview of the product, how to apply, embossed samples and pictures of previous projects. The hands-on instruction, limited to 12, with a pre-registration fee of $15. Participants will learn how to mount fabric to board, work with and apply paste, execute a simple 1 part design, execute a 2 part design, clean up, and product storage. $15 ($30 value) for the hands-on portion of the demonstration will cover: 7 oz. of emBella-paste in two colors (3.5 oz. each), a 1-part stencil, a 2-part stencil

World Cosplay Summit
Every year, Japan gathers teams from eighteen countries to display and show off their costumes in a televised showcase called the World Cosplay Summit. Christine Rost & Amanda Johnson of Wild Garden Cosplay were the Rocky Mountain Regional champions for team USA and placed 2nd in the USA 2013 Finals. They will discuss the event and how it has changed the concept of international costuming.

Costume-Con 31 is very excited to have the following Featured Artists attending and sharing their skills at the convention.

Dragon Dronet

Dragon is Co-Owner of Renegade Effects Group. Renegade Effects Group provides Costumes, Props, Physical Effects and much more for movies, television, music videos, advertising and more. Of recent note, Dragon portrayed Darth Malgus in the Star Wars: The Old Republic Flash Mob in Times Square in December 2011. Renegade Effects Group provided all of the costumes and choreography for the event.

Dragon Dronet is a weapon specialist, armorer, actor, prop master, and Sith Lord who has worked in Hollywood for decades. Dragon has built props for tv shows and movies such as Heroes, Lost, True Blood, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Total Recall, RoboCop 2, Batman Returns, Eraser, Alien: Resurrection, MacGyver, Alien Nation, Space Rangers, The X-Files, Babylon 5, Earth 2, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Star Trek: First Contact, (among many others).

For Star Trek: Generations, Dragon created engineering tools, tricorders, a Klingon dagger, and comunicators. For First Contact, he made phaser rifles and Worf’s Klingon weapon. As an actor, Dragon appeared in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country as a Klingon in the trial scene and as a Klingon in an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He also played a pit fighter in Conan the Barbarian, Red Army Leader in Planet of the Apes, a Predator in the short film Batman: Dead End, and had a cameo as a vampire in an episode of True Blood. Dragon also currently appears as Darth Malgus for Lucasarts, and can be seen in the video game Star Wars: the Old Republic.

Mythica von Griffyn

Mythica has been doing haunted houses since she was 14. Locally she has worked with Starland, and their annual haunted houses. She has been an award winning artist since she was a teen. Two years ago she got into bodypainting and her career has taken off. Last year in 2012 she was listed as Westword’s Best of Denver Best Bodypainter. She has worked with local runway shows, conventions, music videos and private photo shoots. For 2013, she is working on publishing a new magazine devoted to bodypainting. Samples of her work can be seen on her Facebook page.

Friday – Shopping at Allyn’s Fabric & Bridal (not open on Monday)

Meet in the hotel lobby at 8:00 am to make carpool arrangements to leave at 8:30. The store opens at 9:00 am and it is about a 30 minute drive. Spend an hour shopping and be back at the hotel by 10:30 for programming.

Monday Afternoon – Shopping at Denver Fabric and Ornamental Beads

Ornamental Beads features over 14,000 bead & jewelry supply items collected during their 40 years in the world of beads. “A large part of our collection consists of rare, old or unusual beads and pieces that provide unique opportunities and inspiration for the creative designer and bead worker. We also stock all of the standard materials such as cut crystal glass, seed, pony & bugle beads, smooth and faceted beads & pendants. We also have a wide selection of sterling, findings and basic tools.”

Meet in the hotel lobby at Noon to make carpool arrangements and leave at 12:30 pm. Head to Denver Fabric first, then on to Ornamental Beads. The group can make its own arrangements for lunch.

Monday Evening – Dinner at Casa Bonita

Celebrating 39 Years of Family Fun Celebrating 39 Years of Family Fun. The Greatest Show in Denver. Mouth watering Mexican food. 30 Foot waterfall and daring cliff divers. Exciting stage shows and musicians. Gift shop and amusement arcade. (Note: Due to the entertainment, everyone entering the restaurant must order an entrée. You cannot just go to watch.) Meet in the hotel lobby at 5:00 pm to make carpool arrangements and leave at 5:30. The restaurant is about at 30 minute drive.
