We will discuss the cultural and historic significance of some of the costumes from these movies, and delve deeper into their true meanings.

Things To Make Us Glow (Electronics Workshop for the Compleat Tyro)
This workshop is for those who have next to no knowledge of electronics and want to take the first steps in a Friendly, hands-on setting. You’ll learn how to make both lamps and LEDs light up. You’ll learn the basics of voltage, current, and resistance, and why they’re important. Series and parallel circuits, switches, what “short circuits” are and how to avoid them, and so on will all be covered. To participate in the hands-on portion you must purchase and bring a $45 parts kit and six fresh AA batteries. Most of the parts will be usable in later projects. Shoe Shine Boot Camp workshop
This is a hands-on workshop in the art of the shoe shine, taught by an Army veteran. Start with the simple but classic brush shine and progress to a military-grade spit shine that would almost make a Drill Sergeant stop yelling. Participants can bring their own real leather shoes or use the thrift store treasures supplied for practicing their skills. Participants will each bring home a quality shoe shine brush and shoe polish applicator. Cost: $16. Limit 12 participants. Sign up at the programming table.

Whether earned or plundered, medals are an important accessory to many Steampunk outfits. Wearing real medals that you did not earn shows serious disrespect for the sacrifices of our military personnel, as well as being illegal! So the solution is to create your own medals! Who wouldn’t be proud to wear their Legion of Merit from the tiny Principality of Steamphoria? A conspicuous Award for Action against Air Pirates will almost always let you drink for free at a Merchant Marine Tavern. In the class you choose the medallion and ribbon to create your own medal. Can You Really DO That to Shoes??
This combination slide show, trunk show, and lecture will give you ideas, inspiration, and solid technical information on how to paint and decorate shoes (or other leather accessories) to work with your costumes. Lots of before-and-after examples of transformed shoes. You’ll see shoes that have been painted, color blocked, sponged, glittered, stenciled and stamped. You’ll learn the best ways to attach embellishments ranging from simple ribbon to feathers, chain, crystals, even chain maille. Includes a detailed handout on how to prep, paint (and or glitter) and seal shoes, how to stitch on embellishments, and which glues to use to reliably attach decorations like piping, trim, chain, and more.

Learn how to embellish and up-cycle shoes (or bags) using leather paints, specialty painting techniques, and a wide variety of ways to attach embellishments such as ribbon, beads, buttons, piping, appliqués, chain, chain mail, feathers, fur, buckles and bling. You will leave class with one completed pair of shoes/sandals, bag, or other accessory. (Boots can take longer than the class time allows). Fee includes use of all materials plus a take-home packet of four soft paint brushes. Bring your own trim and embellishments, or purchase embellishment items from the teachers’ stash. Children 10 and up welcome if accompanied by an adult. Cost: $12. Limit 20 participants.

Getting Wired! Basic Electronics Tech for Costuming and Props
So… you know a little, or maybe even a lot, about electronics. Now, how do you apply that to costuming and prop-building? It’s not just about what works on the bench, but what is small and light enough, bright enough, and reliable enough to work on stage and in the halls. This is where we’ll talk about that. This is a combined meetup/demo, so if you’ve done some cool stuff (like maybe something you wore in the F&SF masquerade last night? Hint hint) that you’d like to show off, please bring it! (Be ready for us to ask you how you did it.) Novices are more than welcome too – there will be plenty of information for everyone!
